Program Information

Minor in Asian Studies

The Asian Studies minor provides students with an interdisciplinary program of study featuring Asian languages and cultures. The program’s mission is to prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers in the U.S. and abroad, and for life-long engagement with the study of language and culture. The Asian Studies Program offers students a broad range of courses, study abroad programs, and extra-curricular opportunities aimed at developing linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and/or Japanese Studies.

The Asian Studies minor is dedicated to fostering knowledge and awareness of Asia in order to enhance our students’ competitiveness in an increasingly globally minded and interconnected world. Students can focus on language or culture and can design their own program of study by combining the Asian Studies minor with another major field of study. Students minoring in Asian Studies at the College of Charleston have found their training and versatile experiences in the program to be keys to their success in a number of different careers including international and domestic business, marketing, government service, education, and media.

Minor in Japanese Studies

The Japanese Studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that is a structured course of study designed to acquaint students with Japanese language, civilization, and culture. The College of Charleston offers one of the most comprehensive Japanese programs in South Carolina. In addition to satisfying the two-year language requirement, it offers third and fourth year courses for students who wish to study the language further. Along with the language courses, literature courses in English translation are offered for students who do not speak Japanese but are Interested in Japanese culture. Learn more about the minor here.

Minor in Middle Eastern and Islamic World Studies

The Middle East has been, is still, and will be playing a significant role in the geopolitical and economic developments of the world. The minor in Middle Eastern and Islamic World Studies is a multidisciplinary course of study that combines the Arabic and Hebrew languages, with courses related to Middle Eastern and Islamic World civilizations, cultures, history, politics and religion. The program is designed to equip the students with the language skills, and introduce them to the cultures and historical backgrounds needed to understand and interact with citizens of the Middle Eastern countries both in the international community and at home.
